A major shift is underway in global resource politics. Belgium is moving forward on returning a century's worth of colonial-era mining archives to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) — geological surveys, maps, and drill logs compiled between 1885 and 1960, currently held at the AfricaMuseum in Tervuren.

Nearly 500 metres of shelving. Decades of exploration data. And a DRC government that says a large part of its territory has never been formally explored.

In today's tech-driven economy, whoever controls the data controls the supply chain. With the DRC holding the world's largest cobalt reserves plus major coltan and copper deposits, these files aren't just historical paperwork — they're a potential blueprint for the next wave of global tech manufacturing, EV batteries, and green energy infrastructure.

This quote captures a growing concern: our education systems are still optimized for an industrial past, not a creative future. Memorization has its place, but it shouldn't overshadow curiosity, critical thinking, and real-world problem solving.  

If we want to prepare young minds for the challenges ahead — climate change, AI, global collaboration — we need to rethink not just what we teach, but how we teach.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗜 𝗔𝗹𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗦𝗹𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗻 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁

Today was one of those days as a Quantity Surveyor.

I opened an architectural drawing for a state government project and what I saw almost gave me a heart attack:

Doors and windows not annotated 🪟🚪

No door and window schedule (so who’s supposed to guess?)

No complete roofing plan

Building section half-done

No specifications

Dimensions scattered and mixed up with texts — making the drawing look like a puzzle board.

And guess what? This wasn’t from a student learning to draw. This was from a quack architect trusted with a government project.

Now, here’s the painful part:
I had a Bill of Quantities to submit by 3:00 p.m.. But after hours of fighting with the drawings, I just shut down my laptop… and went to sleep. Because honestly, how do you measure what was never drawn properly in the first place?

This is the harsh reality of our profession in Africa:
📌 Quacks in high places.
📌 Professionals struggling with incomplete information.
📌 Deadlines that don’t care about the nonsense you’re handed.

If we keep normalizing mediocrity in design, construction will keep failing — and taxpayers’ money will keep getting wasted.

Sometimes I wonder: when will we finally start holding people accountable?

Africa’s Roads Are Built to Fail

Everyone is excited when a new road is commissioned in Africa.
Cameras flash, governors and presidents cut ribbons, contractors celebrate.

But after the first rainy season, the truth appears:
Potholes, erosion, cracks, and flooded highways.

👉 In Nigeria, the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway — Africa’s busiest highway — has been under “rehabilitation” for over 20 years, swallowing billions in contracts.
👉 In Kenya, parts of the Thika Superhighway flooded less than 5 years after completion because of poor drainage.
👉 In Uganda, the Entebbe Expressway cost nearly $476 million, but toll revenue struggles because traffic avoids the high fees.

So what’s the real issue?

Short-term construction over long-term durability.
Contractors win tenders with the lowest bid, then cut corners. The result? Roads that last 5 years instead of 25.

Asphalt obsession.
Africa keeps laying asphalt, even in tropical regions where heavy rainfall destroys it. Countries like Brazil long ago shifted to concrete roads for durability.

Maintenance blindness.
Roads are built, commissioned, then abandoned. No structured maintenance culture. By the time repairs begin, costs triple.

📊 Compare this:

Europe: Average road lifespan is 20–25 years with regular maintenance cycles.

Africa: Average lifespan is 5–8 years before total reconstruction.

The result?
Africa spends more rebuilding old roads than building new ones.

And here’s the kicker:
Bad roads cost Africa more than corruption.

According to the African Development Bank, poor road networks add up to 40% extra cost to goods transported across the continent. This means a bag of cement in Lagos can be cheaper than in Bamenda (Cameroon), simply because trucks break down or get delayed on terrible roads.

Meanwhile, politicians celebrate highways that can’t survive their first decade.

⚠️ Provocative truth:
Africa doesn’t have an infrastructure deficit. It has an infrastructure maintenance crisis.

Until we build for durability, invest in quality materials, and enforce strict supervision, Africa’s roads will remain a never-ending cycle of ribbon cuttings, failures, and reconstructions.

In Africa today, 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗿𝘂𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝗑𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Not cement. Not steel. Not timber. Corruption.

Take Nigeria’s Ajaokuta Steel Plant — billions of dollars pumped in since the 1970s. Promised as Africa’s industrial pride, it’s still incomplete, rusting in silence, while we keep importing steel. Or Kenya’s Standard Gauge Railway — celebrated as modern infrastructure, yet surrounded by corruption scandals that nearly doubled its cost.

Meanwhile, roads are washed away after the first rainy season. Bridges collapse within five years. Hospitals are built without functioning plumbing. Schools are constructed without roofs that can withstand the wind. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲. 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗳𝘁.

And here’s the irony: 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮’𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗿𝘂𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. If we fixed this one sector, we’d unlock millions of jobs, industrial growth, and cities that last centuries instead of decades.

Look at history.

The Great Pyramids of Giza — built over 4,500 years ago, still standing, still studied, still admired.

Roman aqueducts — some still supply water today.

Medieval cathedrals in Europe — took centuries to build, yet remain monuments of durability.

Compare that with modern African public projects, where an average road lasts less than 10 years, and some don’t even survive their commissioning ceremonies. Why? Because 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗻, 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝘂𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁.

Every time a contractor is forced to “settle officials” before getting paid, every time cement bags are diverted to private estates, every time regulators look away from substandard work — 𝗮 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱’𝘀 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗽𝘀𝗲𝘀, 𝗮 𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗹𝗲𝘀, 𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗽.

🔑 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵: Corruption in construction doesn’t just waste money. It 𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲.

The question is: 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗿𝘂𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘄𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀?

𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁. 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗹.
𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲, 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽.

Because one day, history will ask: Did Africa build cities for its people, or castles for its thieves?

𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚’𝐬 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐦 𝐨𝐫 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐭?

A 50kg bag of cement in Africa now costs 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐚 daily 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐮𝐦 𝐰𝐚𝐠𝐞 of the skilled laborer building it.

We see 𝟑𝟓–𝟖𝟎% 𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐬 on cross-border building projects — delivering homes, schools, and offices for Africans abroad and foreign investors who believe in the continent’s future.

Every month, nearly 𝐍𝟏.𝟐𝐁 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫 move across Lagos, Nairobi, Accra, and Johannesburg. The demand doesn’t stop. Diaspora families are building. Multinationals are building. Yet, in many places, 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬.

Here’s the paradox: 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚’𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐬 $𝟏 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐛𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟑𝟎.
But across the continent, we still 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞 — steel rods, tiles, cement additives, even nails.

Iron ore in Guinea lies untouched. Limestone in Ethiopia sits idle. Timber in Congo rots unprocessed. Meanwhile, billions of dollars flow to Turkey, China, and India for the very same materials.

This underdevelopment costs Africa 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 $𝟑𝟎 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 — money that could fund housing, hospitals, and highways.

If Africa treated construction like energy, we’d have 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬, 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐥 𝐡𝐮𝐛𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐯𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐬 in every region.

Once, Lagos and Nairobi were home to record-breaking skyscrapers. Today, we outsource scaffolding and import bricks.

Tiles from Ogun? Now Spanish. Granite from Jos? Replaced by Chinese composites. Bricks from Benin? Substituted with Turkish panels.

This is Africa’s tragedy: 𝐰𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐫𝐚𝐰, 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝.

🌍 But it doesn’t have to stay this way.

Cement, steel, granite, timber — these are not just materials. They’re 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐤𝐞𝐲𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.

The call is clear:
• 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐦 𝐚𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬.
• 𝐑𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬.
• 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬, 𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬, 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐫𝐬.
• 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐞𝐱𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬.

🌲 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐬.

If we don’t act, we’ll be remembered as the generation that 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐰𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬.

𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚’𝐬 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐦 — 𝐖𝐡𝐨’𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠?

In 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓, projects across the continent attracted 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐰 — from skyscrapers in Nairobi to mega-ports in West Africa and housing estates in Johannesburg.

Sounds like a win, right?
Here’s the hard truth: 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝟕𝟎% 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐠𝐨 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐬.

The concrete, steel, glass, machinery — much of it is 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐝, and profits flow back to boardrooms in 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞, 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐚, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐥𝐞 𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐭. Major EPCs bring their own equipment and specialists, lock up supply chains, and leave 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐬.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲:
