B. Y. Vijayendra Targets Rahul Gandhi, Says He Cannot Tolerate PM Modi’s Popularity

BJP Karnataka President B. Y. Vijayendra criticised Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party while speaking at the concluding ceremony of the Seva Sankalpa Abhiyan in Hosanagara on October 14.

Vijayendra said India had emerged as the world’s fourth-largest economy under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. He credited the government’s infrastructure development and welfare schemes for youth, women, farmers and the poor.

He alleged that Rahul Gandhi was unable to accept Modi’s continued popularity and accused the Congress of criticising the Election Commission out of frustration.

Vijayendra also alleged that the Congress government was trying to make former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah a scapegoat and claimed that the party had established a unit to conduct sting operations to keep its MLAs under control.

Former minister Araga Jnanendra, State Vice-President Haratalu Halappa, MLCs Bharathi Shetty and Dhananjaya Sarji, S. Dattatri, MLAs and other party leaders attended the event.

Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge chaired the 5th meeting of the Karnataka Prison Development Board in Bengaluru on October 14.

He directed officials to improve the quality and packaging of products made by prisoners, expand their market reach and increase sales to make the Board financially self-reliant.

The meeting also discussed prisoners’ skill development and rehabilitation, art therapy programmes, collaboration with voluntary organisations, de-addiction centres, prison infrastructure development and modern vocational training.

Priyank Kharge also expressed strong displeasure over the absence of department heads from several departments, including Health, Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry and Industries, who had sent junior officials in their place. He stressed that department heads must attend important meetings in person and take responsibility for decisions.

Mysuru Dasara 2026: Elephant Prashanth Selected to Carry the Golden Howdah

The 54-year-old elephant Prashanth has been selected to carry the Golden Howdah during the Mysuru Dasara 2026 Jamboo Savari, Urban Development and Mysuru District In-charge Minister Dr. Yathindra Siddaramaiah announced.

Prashanth has participated in the Dasara celebrations for 18 years. His calm temperament, experience, suitability for carrying the Golden Howdah and ability to respond to his caretakers’ instructions were among the factors considered during the selection.

Elephant Dhananjaya will serve as the reserve elephant, while Abhimanyu, Gopi, Kaveri and Roopa will perform their designated roles in the procession. Ekalavya, Sugreeva, Lakshmi, Srikanta, Srirama and Mahendra will also be part of the elephant squad.

The Chief Ministers of Kerala and Telangana have agreed to attend the celebrations as guests, while around 40 prominent film personalities from Karnataka and other parts of the country are also expected to participate.

Preparations are underway to celebrate Mysuru Dasara with grandeur and significance.

GBA Organises 5K Marathon to Raise HIV/AIDS Awareness Among Youth

The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) organised a district-level 5K marathon titled “Red Ribbon Run – HIV/AIDS Awareness for Youth” at Sheshadripuram First Grade College in Yelahanka New Town.

Dr. Syed Sirajuddin Madini, Chief Health Officer of the GBA, emphasised scientific awareness, infection prevention and the need to build a discrimination-free society. He urged young people to spread accurate information about HIV/AIDS, understand its modes of transmission and preventive measures, and dispel misconceptions about people living with HIV.

More than 500 students participated in the marathon, with prizes awarded to three winners each in the men's and women's categories. The programme was organised in collaboration with the Karnataka State AIDS Prevention Society and the District AIDS Control and Prevention Unit, with support from various partner organisations.

UN Raises Concern Over Mass Detentions Ahead of Delhi Protests

The United Nations has expressed concern over reports of mass detentions of protesters, civil society members, lawyers and journalists before and during large-scale demonstrations in Delhi on October 10.

UN Human Rights Spokesperson Thameen Al-Kheetan urged Indian authorities to respect the right to peaceful assembly, ensure restraint by law enforcement agencies, and immediately and unconditionally release all those arbitrarily detained.

The UN also called for meaningful dialogue to address the concerns raised by protesters.
