For the final episode the The Feature Series I hosted over on ‪@digspaghetti‬ I get to chat with fellow video essayist ‪@patrickhwillems‬ about his short film The Dinner Plan, and what it's like to make the transition from YouTube to Narrative Filmmaking. Go check it out!

Really enjoyed getting to chat with ‪@Joel-Haver‬ for this episode of ‪@digspaghetti‬ about his approach to filmmaking. I love Joel's commitment to maintaining independence and creative freedom and advocating for just getting out there and doing it without the gatekeepers.

Welcome to YouTube Mr. Shyamalan!

Here's the first interview in the Feature Series I hosted on ‪@digspaghetti‬. I really enjoyed getting to sit down with YouTube Filmmaking legends Freddie Wong and Matt Arnold from RocketJump and to learn about their upcoming action film Nail House.

Excited to share that I'll be guest hosting ‪@digspaghetti‬ for a mini-series about creators that are making feature films. In the first video I dive into what's happening in Hollywood, and the different approaches creators are taking to making and distributing films. In future episodes, I'll be sitting down to chat with some of the creators who a finding creative ways to get their movies made. Go check it out!

Thank you to everyone who signed up for Nebula or to support my Patreon because of my post about the copyright claims. The support truly means a lot! Here are 4 movies I think deserve more love:

Warner Bros. is currently on a spree of claiming and demonetizing any video I've made containing a clip of one of their films, many of them years after they've been released. Not only do these video legally fall under Fair Use according to U.S. law, from a practical perspective they're just shooting themselves in the foot! These videos basically free promotion, the kind they pay influencers to pump out on Instagram and TikTok.

I don't like to come on here and complain, but I often get emails from aspiring video essayists asking how I deal with copyright claims, and the answer is, like everybody else! I operate within what I believe to be the legal boundaries afforded by Fair Use in the US, creating content that comments on, transforms, uses only as much of the original as necessary and does not harm the market for the original in any way, but despite that, after a decade of having a solid track record on YouTube, I can still wake up to find 10 of my video demonetized overnight, no longer generating the revenue I use to pay rent.

A lot of this is just one of the hazards of this job, and I've learned to deal with it, but fighting this stuff makes it hard to make a consistent living making these kinds of videos on YouTube, and if they've meant something to you, or you want to support their continued creation, supporting my Patreon or signing up for Nebula the best ways to help me continue doing this work.

It might be what Spielberg does best. My latest video on what defines "The Shot" is coming to YouTube on Tuesday, but you can watch an extended cut right now, (ad-free) over on Nebula: https://nebula.tv/videos/thomasflight...

Sometimes people ask me in comments or DMs how they can learn to do film analysis. The answer is: don't study film analysis. Instead study filmmaking, art, and media theory. Watching movies is good, but it won't give you a complete understanding. A lot of what I know comes from practical experience in film and video production, but the other best way to learn about filmmaking is by reading books.

I've released a bookshelf tour of some of the film, media theory, and art criticism books that have informed my videos and perspective over the years and you can watch both parts right now on Nebula: https://nebula.tv/videos/thomasflight...
