The first Berlin Sleeper (Serial #41-9042) was a B-17E assigned to the 97th Bomb Group, the first heavy bomber group of the U.S. Eighth Air Force to arrive in England. 
It was part of the very first Eighth Air Force mission against occupied Europe on August 17, 1942, targeting the Rouen-Sotteville marshalling yards in France.
After initial operations in England, it was transferred and eventually written off in May 1945.
