Mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, releases files exposing that New Yorkers were lied to about the quality of the air after the September 11th attacks. Asbestos was commonly sprayed onto the steel frames of high-rise buildings built in this era as fireproofing, including the World Trade Center. When the towers collapsed, this fireproofing was pulverized, releasing huge quantities of asbestos fibers into the air over Lower Manhattan. Many of these fibers were so small that they were difficult to detect with the testing methods commonly used at the time.
